Important information

Oyster mushrooms are generally regarded as safe for consumption when they are properly cultivated, carefully harvested, and thoroughly cooked. However, it is important to be aware that individual reactions to mushrooms can vary. Some people may experience mild digestive discomfort when trying oyster mushrooms for the first time, particularly if large quantities are consumed.

For this reason, if you are new to eating oyster mushrooms, we recommend starting with a small, cooked portion and allowing time to observe how your body responds before consuming larger amounts. Oyster mushrooms should always be cooked thoroughly, as consuming them raw may lead to digestive difficulties and potential stomach upset.

It is also essential to ensure that mushrooms are fresh, free from signs of spoilage such as a sour odour, slimy texture, or visible mould, and stored appropriately prior to consumption. Spoiled mushrooms can cause foodborne illnesses if eaten.

Alongside oyster mushrooms, we also offer spawn for lion’s mane and chestnut mushrooms (Pholiota adiposa).

Lion’s Mane: Known for its unique appearance and potential health benefits, lion’s mane mushrooms are highly regarded in various cultures. However, we do not make any medicinal claims regarding the effects of lion’s mane on cognitive health. These mushrooms should always be cooked thoroughly before consumption, as raw lion’s mane may cause digestive discomfort for some people.

Chestnut Mushrooms (Pholiota adiposa): This lesser-known mushroom is prized for its rich, earthy flavour and slightly nutty taste. Chestnut mushrooms should also be thoroughly cooked before consumption to ensure optimal digestibility and flavour. As with other mushrooms, ensure they are fresh and free from spoilage signs to avoid any adverse reactions.

Frequently asked questions

Do you ship internationally?

At the moment, we only ship within the UK, including Northern Ireland and Scotland. Unfortunately, we do not offer international shipping.

What should I do with the spent growing block?

You can compost the spent block after removing and recycling the growing bag, or use it as mulch or soil enrichment in your garden.

How do I know when my mushrooms are ready to harvest?

Your mushrooms are ready to harvest when the caps have fully expanded and the edges start to flatten out. For oyster mushrooms, look for the moment when the caps are still slightly curled under but are no longer tightly closed. The colour of the caps should also be vibrant, and you’ll notice a soft, delicate texture. It's best to harvest just before the mushrooms release their spores, as this helps maintain the freshness and quality of your crop.

Do you sell magic mushroom products?

We do not sell "magic" mushroom products.

All products sold by Mushroom Hut are intended solely for the cultivation of gourmet mushrooms and are not for direct consumption, medicinal use, or use by animals.
